Training Tips      ( email contact Mike McKenna)

  • Descend Safely - (by Robert Panzera)

Four tips to help you descend safely and faster.

    1. Look ahead. This will prepare you for upcoming obstacles and allows you to line up for turns. When you approach a corner, look as far around the corner as possible. A good rule of thumb is to keep the road ahead (as far as you can see) in your direct line of sight, and your front wheel in your periphery.

    2. Weight the bike properly. Place your hands in the drops to keep your center of gravity low:
    • Straight sections – Keep pedals parallel to the ground, hands firmly in the handlebar drops with loose elbows, back flat, knees close to the top tube and slide body back slightly in the saddle. Hover as necessary based on the roughness of the road.
    • Cornering – Form a “tripod” on your bike. For example, when turning left, put your right pedal down, sit firmly on the saddle and apply light pressure on the handlebar drop with your left hand. You aren’t turning the handlebars, merely applying pressure to the handlebar in the direction you are turning.

    3. Brake before the corner. Control your speed before you enter a corner. Braking in the middle of a turn can cause you to lose traction or control of the bike.

    4. Attack the downhill. Using the above techniques, position yourself properly for each corner and focus on staying smooth. Never sit up or lock the elbows out, stay loose and keep your center of gravity low.

The above tips are provided for general information purposes only. Always consider your personal safety and the safety of other riders.

Robert Panzera is a Level II USA Cycling coach and owner and operator of Cycling Camp San Diego (CCSD). CCSD is designed to provide a venue of warm-weather base miles in the off season for serious touring and elite racing cyclists.  CCSD has offered a one week camp specific for TER early April 2009.  For more information, visit www.cyclingcampsandiego.com or contact Bob Campbell about the TER camp.
