Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race Entrants
- If you are registered for the LT100 this August,
Dean Cahow would like to hear
from you. Dean is an LT100 veteran and would like to offer this
year’s TER racers and crew chiefs the opportunity to get
together in a social setting in June. The idea is to make those
introductions that haven’t been made, before we all get up to
Leadville on race weekend; to have some fun and a little riding;
and to gain the benefit of bringing racers and crew chiefs of
varied LT100 experience together for a confab focused on this
great race. Contact Dean for more information. -

Weekend
training:
Saturdays:
Many ride leaders are racing during the summer, so most Saturday
rides will be "show and go" until August. This means that
everyone should feel free to show up at Morrison and Rooney Rds,
ready to ride by 9 am. Whoever is there can choose the route.
Sundays:
There is always a ride organized by the Team Evergreen Club. All
TER racers should consider joining in on these rides, as their
training and racing schedule permits. Route and start times are
listed on the TE website.
-
Boulder
training ride
- every Sunday morning - coming in early August.
-
Mt Evans
training rides
- June 20th, 7:30 am with Michael Kiessig, and July 6th

Training Tips

Basic Racing
Tactics
- (by Robert Panzera)
Solid
understanding of simple tactics is often overlooked or never
properly learned in many competitive cyclists - even cyclists at
the USA Cycling Category 2 level usually may have an intuitive
sense of tactics, but lack a solid foundation in simple tactics
that should be employed at every race, and even, every group
ride.
Stay in the
first third of the pack
Arnie Baker, renowned cycling coach and physician, once summed
up the three types of competitors at the end of a race: those
that say, "I made it happen;" those that say "I saw it happen";
and those that say, "What happened?"
You never want to
ask fellow competitors, "What happened?," at the end of any race
or group ride. There may be some situations in which you
cannot physically match your competitors, and you will just have
to say, "I saw it happen." We all know that is what
physical training is for: to prepare you to be able to react
when things "happen" in races or group rides. But to be
someone who says, "I made it happen," it takes more than
physical power in cycling - it takes tactics.
By
staying in the
first third of the pack,
you are definitely going to "see it happen" and most likely, as
the race or group ride motors on, you will be able to "make it
happen".
Riding in the
first third of the pack allows you to:
Learn who are the
"real" competitors of the race
Learn your
competitors' body language
Notice who is
talking to each other and planning attacks
Look at the
terrain ahead for chances to attack or prepare yourself for
attacks
Prevent being
gapped in technical sections pr on hills when less-skilled or
weaker riders become compromised
React timely to
attacks from the periphery that go off the front
Limit your
exposure to crashes
Save energy,
because there will be less fluctuation in speed near the front
(i.e., limits the 'accordion effect')
Continued next
week
The above
tips are provided for general information purposes only. Always
consider your personal safety and the safety of other riders.
Robert Panzera is a Level II USA Cycling coach and owner and
operator of Cycling Camp San Diego (CCSD). CCSD is designed to
provide a venue of warm-weather base miles in the off season for
serious touring and elite racing cyclists. CCSD has
offered a one week camp specific for TER early April 2009. For more information,

Bob Campbell about the TER camp.
